Yatton Rugby
Frome RFC

Yatton RFC Colts v Frome RFC Academy

Report by James Newbery

On Sunday the Frome RFC Academy travelled to North Somerset to face Yatton RFC Colts in the U18s Somerset North League.

The home side initially attacked welll, but the ball was stolen on the floor by Kimi Endicott. Something he would repeat throughout the game. From the resulting early penalty, fly-half Henry Williams kicked deep, a good line out followed and a powerful run by Captain, Bryn Lewis. The pressure led to a penalty to Frome, which Williams kicked, for a 0-3 lead.

After five minutes, a kick from Yatton was claimed well by Charlie Stratford, he flicked ball inside to Archie Pearn who attacked into space. Quick ball followed. Zach Sibley passed wide to Archie Coleman, who ran strongly down wing and was narrowly tackled into touch.

With fifteen minutes gone, successive carries from Dom Evans and Ewan Cox gave field position. The scrum, dominant all game, held strong and Endicott and Alfie Newbery hassled the fly half. The ball was spilt and Williams picked up the loose ball and beat two defenders to finish well. He converted his own try to make the score 0-10.

More points were added after twenty minutes. After a rampaging run from Sebastian Smith, Frome moved the ball at pace. A penalty followed, which Williams slotted for three points.

In the final moments of the half, Yatton were under pressure from Frome’s defence. This led to handling errors and Cox was quickest to react, scoring from close range. The score was a one-sided 0-18 at half-time.

The second half began with coast to coast rugby, with all backs linking up with added touches of stardust from Prop

Isaac Cornish and Second Row Kayden Henley. Scramble defence from Yatton meant Evans was narrowly denied an amazing try.

However, an interception try from Yatton  followed, to make the score 7-18.

From another dominant scrum, Newbery stepped inside, beat one defender and fed Toby Cassidy. He found Titas Beaven, who was tackled narrowly short of the line.

Frome generated a driving line out, after a dash from Harry Greenwood, Cox dived over to score his second. Williams added the two points for a 7-25 score line.

Five minutes later, Newbery intercepted a loose pass and found Cornish who pirouetted and offloaded, putting Beaven into a gap, he beat two defenders and the ball was recycled. The ball went through the hands, great give and go from Williams put Cassidy clear, he passed to Stratford who scored out wide. Williams nudged the extras from the touchline.

Into the final ten minutes, after more great work at ruck from Endicott and Kieran Stacey, Lewis found some space. He still had a lot to do and swerved in and out to beat three defenders from the edge of his own half to score. Frome now held a 7-39 advantage.

Yatton struck back with a breakaway try from half way, to narrow the gap. But following a lengthy break for an injury, Sibley caught the ball deep in own half and ran well.

Scrum to Frome, Smith picked up from the base and ate up ground - before surprising everyone with a kick into space. Greenwood dove on the ball, swerved and almost scored. The ball was recycled and eventually touched down by Henley to end the game. 14-44. Another good win on the road for Frome.

Player of the Match was awarded to Zach Sibley.
