Wells RFC
Frome RFC

With Taunton RFC 3rds unable to raise a side 2 weeks ago, Frome 3rds arrived at Wells RFC for their first playable league game of the season.

Frome kicked off and established early possession deep in the Wells half. It was clear from the KO that Wells had some strong, fast players who were winning the early contests at the ruck. With Frome unable to withstand the Wells counter rucks the first 15 minutes were nervous and full of individual errors that saw Wells ease out of their half and to within 5 meters of the Frome try line.

Scrum down and the first big test for Frome with the put in resulted in the ball coming out the back of the scrum at speed and pounced on by the Wells Scrum Half for the first points of the game.

Strong Carrys from Will Will, Matt Lewis and Stuart Elliott had the Wells defence over committing in the tackles, this in turn opened up space for Hooker Matt Jones and Prop Dan Chaventre to make darting runs, keeping the Wells backs busy.

With Rob Parnell, Chris Logan and David Evan's providing much needed support at the breakdowns, the visiting forwards began to turn the game in Frome’s favour.

Decisive passing from Scrum Half Andrew Greenwood to Fly Half Scott Woodward allowed the Frome backs to run with the pace and determination that pushed ever closer to the home try line.

As Frome upped the tempo it was a side step from No.8 Matt Lewis that saw the gap open up and ran in for the score, Scott Woodward adding the extras.

With the Forwards working hard, it was again the combination of Greenwood and Woodward who released Centre Max Lund to nearly go all the way only to be caught short of the line, but a superb offload to Jones saw The Hooker cross the line, Woodward adding the extras before being sidelined with an injury shortly after.

Mark O'Shea was thrust into action with a kick for touch and It was Rob Parnell who jumped and caught to keep Fromes possession. As Frome again edged closer to the try line it was Lund, again with the backhand pass to Jones that opened the defence to see the Forward run over for his second try.

Wells rallied early in the 2nd half and pushed the Frome defence all the way to the try line, however, frequent infringements by Wells allowed O'Shea to clear his lines and relive pressure, The backline including Jamie Smith, Mike Perry, Pete White and Taylor Blagdon also offered the forwards a breather, individual runs from them saw Wells repeatedly turning and chasing back towards their own try line.

Frome continued to battle hard and it was Jordan Talbot, on at Flanker, who was first to a breakdown and turned the ball over for the first time for Frome, with strong carrys from Sam woodward, back after a year out with injury, and new player Richard Trott, Wells struggled as Frome turned the screw.

It was Lund who earned his deserved try from a quick pass from O’Shea, bursting through the wells line and scoring in the corner.

A try saving effort from Perry saw all the players praising his work rate to ensure Wells had no way back into the game.

Perry would soon cross the line following some great hands as he scored at pace in the corner, Converted by O'Shea.

Introductions from Jon Dolman and Jamie Cooley added much needed fresh legs and allowed Frome to manage the remaining 15 minutes, as Frome slowed the pace and ensured the victory which takes them to the too of the Somerset 3 South.

Final Score:
Wells RFC 3rd 7 - 31 Frome RFC 3rd

Man of the Match was awarded to Max Lund.

Debuts for Richard Trott who was dominant in the tackles, Jon Dolman for providing the fresh legs and accurate passing in the backs and Jamie Cooley for his work rate during his first ever game of rugby.
