The Frome RFC 3rd XV made the short trip to Warminster RFC on Saturday to face their 2nd XV, and with the sun shining received the kick off.
The visitors set to work quickly attacking from the start with strong carries from No.8 Daniel Castle and Neil George, Frome battled against the strong Warminster defence which held up firm.
The two sides went toe to toe for long parts of the first half with Frome’s defence as relentless as the home sides. But errors began to creep in as both teams tried to force the phases.
Scrum Half Jordan Talbot was able to clear the Frome 22 with some clever box kicks, and despite the hard work of the Frome backline chasing the ball down, breaking through Warminster's defence was beginning to look impossible.
However, on 30 minutes, Will Button playing at Inside Centre broke the Warminster defence and carried the ball and three would be tacklers to within 1m of the try line.
A penalty was awarded to Frome shortly after but with a Warminster player suffering a major injury, play was paused for some time.
When play resumed, Frome had the scrum 5 metres out and it was Fly Half Scott Woodward who spotted the gap to cross the line for a try.
As the second half began, Warminster upped the pace and Frome saw all 3 substitutes used early in the half due to injuries. With Warminster attacking, big tackles from Dan Chaventre, Max Lund and Jamie Smith Warminster were held, just.
With Frome pinned deep in their half, it was a chance break from Lund that eased the pressure with Jamie Smith and Taylor Blagdon supporting the break and pinning Warminster deep into their own half.
It was now Warminster that we’re having to clear their lines with the first return by Fullback Leon Langford and then by his replacement Mark O'Shea.
With O'Shea nearing the Warminster 5 metre line it was only a last ditch tackle that held Frome out.
With minutes remaining on the clock, Warminster threw everything at the right hand wing, where Prop Dave Evan's was doing a marvellous job covering after an injury.
The home side made one last attack and having broke the Frome line and heading down the wing it was Button who chased back to make a huge covering tackle keeping the score at 0 - 5 to Frome.
Final Score:
Warminster RFC 2nds 0 - 5 Frome RFC 3rd
Man of the Match, sponsored by The Old Bath Arms, Frome went to No.8 Daniel Castle.
Frome would also like to wish a very speedy recovery to Warminster RFC Player Chris Douglas who suffered a broken leg during the game.
Next week the Frome RFC 3rd are back in league action when they travel to Wells RFC 3rds.
