Keynsham RFC 21 - 15 Frome RFC

Report by Trevor Osborne

Frome travelled to 4th placed Keynsham RFC on Saturday for a rearranged fixture, looking to build on the previous weeks improved performance, the side are desperate for the much needed wins.

Frome kicked off and the home side showed some good phase play to find good field position. Winger, Sam Cassidy would be tested early in defence and put in a great tackle to stop the Keynsham No.8 in his tracks.

Second Row, Geoff Taylor Captained the side in the absence of Skipper Alex Mallon, and the team looked to build pressure, and were soon rewarded when Scum Half, Garrie Webster darted over to score. Unfortunately the conversion going just wide by Henry Bull.

The home side came back into the game and secured their first points of the day, after a break by the Scrum Half created an opportunity for the No.8 to cross the line and score. The conversion was added.

Keynsham continued to threaten with ball in hand and another break from inside their own half saw the Winger dot down in the corner, despite the best efforts of the covering defence. The conversion being added.

The Forward Pack were working tirelessly and continued to defend valiantly before the half time whistle. The Backrow of Sam Bartlett, Josh Hills and Bailey Brook carrying strongly, with Brook eventually powering his way over for a try.

HT: Keynsham RFC 14 - 10 Frome RFC

Frome started strongly in the second half, and after a break by Winger Bailey Rusz space was created for Full Back Henry Bull to cross over for a text book try. Unfortunately the conversion going wide again with Frome now only 1 point ahead.

The home side looked to score again but some stout defence from the whole team kept them at bay. Eventually, Frome ran out of numbers, and fashioned a converted try to retake the lead.

Frome didn’t give up and battled for the final 10mins, building pressure towards the Keynsham try line but were unable to convert their chance in the final minutes when the referee adjudged that a maul had been stopped just metres from the line. The side would have to settle for a losing bonus point.

Another improved performance and Frome are looking forward to entertaining Cheltenham at home next weekend after three matches on the road.

Captain for the day, Geoff Taylor commented “The squad really came together and delivered one of the team performance of the season despite the result not going our way. A special mention must go to the young Josh Hills for his player of the match performance, having caused Keynsham all sorts of trouble throughout the game.”
