Bradford on Avon RFC v Frome RFC II
Report by Andy Vince
The Frome RFC 2nd XV travelled the short distance to Bradford on Avon RFC 1st XV with a strong side on paper.
But Frome were caught napping with only 6 mins on the clock, a cross kick from the BOA fly half was knocked on and from the resulting scrum the home side found a gap in the defence and supported well to go over the line. The conversion being added.
With 27 mins gone, Frome were struggling to find any shape and were giving away lots of penalties, this stopped them getting any phases together and the hosts capitalised on this and crashed over for the try, the conversion being added.
But straight from kick off Frome showed they were still in the fight with a good carry from Stevan Randall, followed by a good run by Captain Stuart Elliott saw some good hands down the line to Rowan Walton out on the Wing who showed good strength to cross over the line. The conversion being missed.
On 31 mins, Frome attempted to run the ball from their own 22 only to give a penalty away for holding on. Bradford on Avon pointed to the posts and added the kick.
Almost from the restart Frome were awarded a penalty from just inside the home sides half, Centre Max Stickley stepped up but the kick went just wide.
On 38 mins a good pick and go from the back of the scrum by No.8 Eliki Bainimoli took the ball into the opposition 22, then popped it up to the supporting player from the next break down the ball found Rob Sully who went over to score. Kick added by Max Stickley.
HT: Bradford on Avon RFC 17 - 12 Frome RFC II
The Second half started badly for Frome as Bradford on Avon cut through the Frome defence which set up a good platform to score almost from kick off.
Then on 46 mins Frome gave away a penalty in their 22 which BoA stepped up and slotted.
Frome were trying hard to get back into the game, but couldn’t put any phases together and struggled to find any structure. Then on 53 mins it got worse for the away side as from a line out the BoA scrum half gambled and intercepted the pass to run in unopposed.
Frome showed another flash of what they could do from an attacking scrum on 57 mins, Frome went blind and scrum half Luke Taylor put Leo Hamlin in space and he showed great pace to cut through the BoA defence to score, the conversion being added by Max Stickley.
Then on 69 mins Frome were awarded a yellow card to Archie Jones for a high tackle. And the final points of the day were added with a Penalty kick.
FT: Bradford on Avon RFC 33 - 19 Frome RFC II
Player of the Match went to Leo Hamlin for a try worthy of any match.
Frome RFC 2nd XV Team Manager Andy Vince commented “A disappointing day at the office, Frome just couldn’t find their shape or structure, lots of effort but from individuals rather than the team. We will be better next week.”
This Saturday the Frome RFC 2nd XV are back in league action and take on local rivals Trowbridge RFC 2nd XV.
