Frome RFC v Corsham
On Saturday the Frome RFC 1st XV were in League action at The Lane when they welcomed Corsham RFC.
With the sun shining, and the large home crowd, it was set for a great day of running rugby, with Frome looking to put right the frustrations of last week’s game.
In the first half, Corsham held Frome to 12-12 in a mistake ridden showing. Corsham looked dangerous with their Inside Centre making an impact with ball in hand throughout the 80 minutes.
It was the visitors who would cross the line to score first, following a knock on by Frome in their 22, Corsham’s Winger breaking free in broken defence to run in for the first points of the day. (0-7)
However, supported by the large home crowd, Frome were eager to get going, and crossed the line when distruption at a Corsham lineout near their own line saw Flanker Matt Smith claim the loose ball and stretch over to make it 5-7.
The visitors continued to threaten, and following repeat penalties the hosts gave them an easy platform and area to attack from, eventually their Inside Centre going over 5-12.
Frome then started to gain some momentum of their own, and with Corsham’s defence stretched, returning Fly Half, Henry Bull found a gap in the defence to dance his way through and sprint over the line to score, adding the conversion. (12-12)
HT: Frome RFC 12-12 Corsham RFC
Frome started the second half strongly with Centre Darrell Thompson scoring 2 very well taken tries giving Frome a well earned lead of 26-12.
Shortly after Frome found themselves close to Corhsams line again with a solid set piece in Frome’s favour this allowed Hooker John Benstead to crash over wide. 31-12.
Corsham would look to score next, again with their Centre finding space out wide to bring the scoreline to 31-17.
In the dying moments of the game Corsham were defending ferociously on their line, being awarded a penalty for their efforts saw them opt to go for touch in search of a losing bonus point.
However failing to find touch, Bull would go on one of his trade mark mazy runs and only being stopped just short of line, but a great supporting line from Winger Bailey Rusz saw him gather the offload and go under the posts untouched.
FT: Frome RFC 38 - 17 Corsham RFC
Coach Jonathan Dicker commented “Corsham are a very dangerous team and we did well to hold them to 17 points. Repeated efforts on our try line and the defensive display were particularly pleasing.
In attack, we took some time to hit our stride and pulled away to 38-17, a scoreline I am happy with. We look ahead to next weeks away fixture to Coombe Down.”
The Player of the Match was awarded to Fullback Simon Westlake.
This Saturday 5th place Frome RFC head to Bath to face 12th place Combe Down RFC, and despite the oppositions league position Frome will know they will have a tough test ahead of them.
