Sherborne RFC 17 - 08 Frome RFC

Report by Trevor Osborne

The Frome RFC 1st XV travelled to Dorset on Saturday as they were back in league action, looking to overturn a one point defeat to Sherborne earlier in the season.

Frome started the game and from the kick off Captain, Geoff Taylor charged down the attempted clearance kick by the home fly half but the ball could not be gathered and a penalty allowed Sherborne to clear their lines.

Both teams tried to create openings but stout defence by both sides kept the game scoreless. The home side eventually opened the scoring when the outside centre broke through for a converted try.

Frome continued to press with fly half Henry Bull creating chances. The visitors eventually got on the scoreboard when Second Row, James Howard crashed over from close range.

The first half continued to be tight with the Frome defence, lead by Cory Plumridge, stepping up to the challenge. As half time approached the Sherborne backs swept the ball wide for their fullback to cross in the corner for a try converted from the touchline to give the home side a 14-5 half time lead.

The second half continued with both sides working to create chances but with both defences on top, chances were few and far between.

Replacement Rowan Walton added impetus to Frome in both attack and defence but the only scores in the second half were a penalty apiece to leave the final score at 17-8 to the home side.

A case of ‘what might have been’ for Frome and they will look forward to the visit of Salisbury RFC, next Saturday when the Club hosts its Annual Players Reunion.
