Frome 33 - 24 Salisbury

Report by Trevor Osborne

Frome welcomed Wiltshire rivals Salisbury to The Lane on Saturday looking to avenge a defeat earlier in the season.

In front of a crowd of VPs and Members who had enjoyed a members lunch the visitors started stronger and after 5 mins took the lead with a well crafted try from a line out catch and drive.

Frome gradually got back into the game and got on the scoreboard when Salisbury infringed at the breakdown and Max Stickley converted the penalty.

Both teams continued to push for another score but stout defence and handling errors prevented further scores.

A break by the Salisbury back rower caught Frome napping but a last ditch tackle by Kye White stopped him just short of the game.

HT: Frome 3 - 5 Salisbury

The home side started with positive effect in the second half and after the forwards with Murray White and James Howard carrying well into the heart of the defence a sublime pass by John Benstead playing at fly half in place of Simon Westlake who was injured in the first half put Harrie Webster away in the corner to give Frome the lead.

However this was short-lived as a mix up in the Frome defence gave Salisbury field position which they capitalised on to retake the lead.

Straight from the kick off Frome pressured the visitors defence and an attempted cross field kick by the Salisbury fly half was gathered by Cory Plumridge who burst past a number of defenders to score in the corner.

Salisbury came back with intent and took a six point lead with a converted try. Frome continued to press and from a fiver metre scrum Alex Mallon picked up and forced himself over for an unconverted try.

Salisbury again pressed hard and another catch and drive resulted in a try to increase their lead.

Frome got back to within one point of the visitors when after a number of phases the ball was worked out to Cory Plumridge out wide and he burst through several tackles to score his second try.

The kick off was gathered by Sam Cassidy who beat a number of defenders and put Frome on the front foot.

Frome built a number of attacks and from close to the line Ollie Andrews crashed over for a try converted by Max Stickley to give Frome the lead.

Frome continued to push forward and another indiscretion at a break down gave Stickley the opportunity to stretch Fromes lead with a penalty.

Salisbury kicked off with 2 minutes on the clock looking to press for a score to get a losing bonus point however the ball was gathered again by Cassidy and then the Frome pack marshalled by scrum half Billy James kept the ball to ensure Frome preserved their 9 points lead and over take Salisbury to climb to third in the league table.
