The Frome RFC Academy hosted Taunton RFC Colts on Sunday 21st September for the opening fixture of the Somerset League campaign.
Archie Pearn and Alexander Harris started the game by combining well, to get over the gain line. For the next few minutes, both Frome and Taunton traded blows with each side counter attacking well.
After seven minutes, Harry Greenwood stole loose ball and found space. After the next breakdown Leo Hajdaraj romped into the 22. Alfie Newbery pinged the ball to Stan Burton and the fly-half went over to score the opening try of the game. A Greenwood conversion followed to make the score 7-0.
Next, Taunton gathered their own kick skilfully, and were close to scoring. Flanker, Jack Duberry and Zach Sibley tackled well in close quarters and Oscar Stickley turned the ball over. He darted into space and Frome cleared. Minutes later, Greenwood and Newbery exploited space on the blind side and Duberry stepped and was narrowly tackled into touch.
After 15 minutes, Taunton attacked in the midfield, but Pearn read the play, intercepted the ball and sprinted home from half way. With the extras added, Frome went into a 14-0 lead.
Feeding off scraps, after dominance from the home side, Taunton attacked the fringes and scored out wide. This cut the score to 14-5.
Following a strong line out drill, Frome attacked the try line, Angus Bush passed wide to Harrie Webster, who darted skilfully in between the onrushing defence. He flicked inside; but the on rushing defence cleared after a knock on.
Into the final few minutes, after a huge defensive set from the home side, Taunton kicked deep, Webster gathered the ball and fed Sibley. The full back saw a gap, chipped, regathered his own kick and scored a brilliant individual try. The kick was successful, for a 21-5 lead.
In the final minute, Taunton offended repeatedly at the breakdown. Scrum half Newbery, took a quick tap and fed Webster. The winger dived over to score for a 26-5 half time score line.
The second half was initially a messy affair. Both teams could not quite look after the ball, second row Kieran Stacey who was a defensive menace all game, turned over loose ball, when Taunton had attacked.
With ten minutes gone. After another strong carry from Hajdaraj, Newbery, kicked deep from his own half, and earned a 50:22 for his well placed kick. Frome won the resulting line-out, and span the ball wide, Taunton went off their feet. Greenwood kicked the penalty for Frome, to move the score line to 29-5.
The game became scrappy, going into the final few minutes. Burton and Pearn hassled well in the midfield and Bush cleared. In the next wave of attack, Sibley saw space and sent a kick upfield that gave Frome the second 50:22 of the game. The final act of the game, a Stacey tackle, and stolen ball by Duberry demonstrated how excellent defence had been the foundation for a good home win.
The game ended, with a score line of 29-5. Frome would like to wish Taunton luck, for their remaining League and Cup fixtures.
